Former Bank of Scotland - 110 Queen Street:
Designed by the T. P. Bennett & Son practice and built 1967-1972, this large city centre concrete frame building fills a prominent site bounding Queen Street, Ingram Street and Miller Street. On to Queen Street and Ingram Street the building is a double height ground floor space wth large glazing areas. Above and held aloft by slender concrete columns is a two storey concrete frame office area clad with precast concrete panels. Further to the east the building steps up to a block running along Miller Street with an additional four storeys.
The building is rigid and regular in the uniformity of its elevations, and has many of the hallmarks of brutalist architecture. It is however sympathetic to its surroundings stepping down to the west and visually opening up the area around the junction of Ingram Street and Queen Street. The large glazing areas lend a transparency and the neutral gray of the precast concrete cladding blends well with the colour palette of the neighbouring buildings. The building has been vacant since the Bank of Scotland left
Probable redevelopment of the site is expected in the next few years and this will involve demolition of the current building. (note: two additional photographs taken in October 2011, rather than June 2011 when the bulk of the photographs on this page were taken show the west elevation with alarge advertising hoarding in place, this seems the first stage of the move dtowards redevelopment. Whilst it is easy for Glasgow to turn its back on such buildings as this former Bank of Scotland, such examples of 1960/70s concrete brutalism are becoming increasingly rare. Without fashion on its side no doubt this building will be replaced by a seductive new build.
